Traditional vs. modern astrology apps
What sets a traditional Hellenistic astrology app apart, and what to look for when choosing one.
Most astrology apps today use modern astrology: quadrant house systems such as Placidus, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as sign rulers, and interpretation focused on personality. Traditional astrology — rooted in the Hellenistic tradition of the ancient Mediterranean — works differently. Here is what to look for if you want an app built on the older approach.
Whole Sign houses. The earliest horoscopic astrologers treated each sign as one house, counted from the rising sign. A traditional app should calculate houses this way rather than defaulting to a quadrant system.
Sect. Whether you were born by day or by night changes which planets act most constructively in your chart. Sect is central to traditional interpretation and rarely appears in modern apps.
The seven classical planets as rulers. Traditional rulerships stay with the visible planets: Mars rules Scorpio, Saturn rules Aquarius, Jupiter rules Pisces. Outer planets may be noted as aspects, but they do not rule signs.
Dignities and the Lots. Domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall describe how well a planet can act. The Hermetic Lots, such as the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit, add points calculated from the Sun, Moon and Ascendant.
Real timing techniques. The heart of traditional astrology is timing. Look for annual profections (which house and planet lead your year), zodiacal releasing (the longer chapters of life), and planetary hours (the daily clock of the Chaldean order).
How Lumina Pulse fits. Lumina Pulse is a traditional Hellenistic astrology app built around all of the above: Whole Sign houses, sect, classical rulerships and dignities, the Lots, profections, zodiacal releasing and planetary hours, with outer planets used only as optional background aspects. You can try the free Planetary Hours calculator without an account, and every plan starts with a free trial.
